Newcastle boss Howe: Important I protect Wilson

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe played down Callum Wilson's reaction to being substituted in victory at Fulham.

Wilson, having scored, was visibly upset when being taken off.

Howe later explained, "Callum Wilson is a goal scorer - that instinct in him is razor sharp.

"But he has only just come back and I am pleased I was ale to protect him and Bruno Guimaraes.

"They have not done a huge amount of training so it was nice to be able to protect them [by bringing them off].

"I have had the other problem, which is not enough players, so it is good that our squad is looking very strong, with competition in every position.

"The lads are disappointed not to get the clean sheet, but this is not the day to pick holes, it is a day to be happy and see the fans celebrate. A big thank you to them."

On two-goal Miguel Almiron's performance, he added: "Mickey epitomises our team. He has been excellent but not had the goals to match his performances. Today he got the two and played really well."
