Newcastle boss Bruce: Players as excited as fans; I'll always be grateful to Ashley

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce says the players are as excited as the fans over their takeover.

Newcastle host Tottenham on Sunday for the first game of a new era for the club.

Bruce said: "The players are excited like all the supporters, they realise there has been a monumental mental change and they want to be part of it and take club to a better place.

"There has been a determination all week but there has been a change in atmosphere everywhere. If they have anything about them, which I'm sure they have, they'll want to be part of it.

Asked if the players were playing for their futures at the club, Bruce said: "That's part of change and part of getting better. They have got to be better.

"They want to make sure they are a part of Newcastle going forward. At the top end rather than staying in the division, which we have been doing for far too long. Won't happen overnight."

On the Mike Ashley era, he added: "The two years I've had managing this club have been difficult, and we all understand that. We all want Newcastle to be at the top end of the league, and unfortunately we have been at bottom end more in the last 10 years. He has given me the opportunity to manage this club and I will always be grateful for that."
