Newcastle United have confirmed the departure of reserves coach Alan Thompson.

Thompson joined United in 2008 during Kevin Keegan's second stint at St James' Park.

A statement from United said today: "Newcastle United can confirm that Alan Thompson has left his role with the club by mutual consent.

"Alan served Newcastle United exceptionally well as Academy Coach during the 2008/09 season, and as Reserve Team Coach last season.

"The club would like to thank Alan for his commitment to player development and coaching during his time at Newcastle."

Thompson is returning to Celtic to join Neil Lennon's backroom team.
