Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has stated that he has been left very surprised by the antics of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Mousa Dembele against Chelsea.

The 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Spurs on Monday night proved to be an extremely feisty affair and the entertaining match was marred by a number of controversial scuffles between the two sets of players.

Arguably the most unsavoury incident came on the stroke of half-time when Dembele appeared to eye-gouge Chelsea striker Diego Costa.

Dembele now faces a lengthy ban for his troubles and his former Fulham teammate Murphy has gone on to admit his surprise at the usually cool Belgian midfielder losing his head on the night.

Murphy said on talkSPORT: "I was really surprised that he got that flustered; he is so cool and calm.

"Don't get me wrong, I know Costa could have an argument in an empty house, but I was really shocked and disappointed in a way because if they had been a bit more disciplined they might have sneaked the game.

"Whatever's coming he's got to take on the chin because he can't be doing that."
