Moyes wishes he was 'seven or eight years older' when taking Man Utd job

David Moyes wishes he was 'seven or eight years older' when he took the manager job at Manchester United.

The Scotsman revealed he was handpicked by Sir Alex Ferguson to replace him at Old Trafford.

But Moyes lasted just ten months in the job and admits he wishes he was older when moving to the Red Devils.

Speaking to the High Performance podcast, the current West Ham boss said: "I've got some great thoughts about Manchester United.

At that time, I had met probably three other of the top clubs either in England or in Europe who wanted me to become manager and in my mind, I wasn't leaving Everton.

"It was only Sir Alex which made the difference because Sir Alex wanted me to become manager and he personally said you're the next manager of Manchester United. But that came very late at the end of the season, I was disappointed I couldn't deal with it better with Bill Kenwright at the time because I was close to Bill at that time.

"But Manchester United was special, special club. I wish I was where I maybe am now, maybe seven, eight years older because at that time I felt experienced and maybe at that time was but look at the history of Man United, they never took what they saw as the top manager they took someone that fitted their model; Sir Alex fitted the model from Aberdeen, had been successful at Aberdeen, gave young players a chance, developed their own, didn't always buy the most expensive players on that planet and that's what I sort of looked forward to.

"I saw them as seeing me as someone who could develop the club, develop the players, put in the coaching and all the things that would come from it, but unfortunately it didn't go that way and I only had 10 months. But I see it as a real positive for many years, not many people got offered the Man United managers job."
