Mourinho rejected by Shaqiri after Klopp's Liverpool groundwork

Liverpool had to beat crowded field to land Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City earlier this summer.

Blick says along with Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton and even Manchester United were all in contact with Stoke and prepared to meet Shaqiri's €14.5m buyout clause.

United boss Jose Mourinho was quickly informed that Shaqiri had his heart set on moving to Liverpool - thanks to the groundwork of Jurgen Klopp.

By the time Mourinho had firmed up his interest, it had been made clear Shaqiri was committed to the Reds after several weeks of talks with the German.

Upon signing the Swiss, Klopp said: "We wanted more options on the offensive. Shaqiri is a fantastic example of how we want to do that. He can play on the side, he can play as a 10, and it looks like he can play as an 8 as well - that's cool."
