Mourinho delighted as Kane double fires 'tired' Spurs past Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur moved into seventh on the Premier League table with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Heung-min Son opened the scoring moments after the first-half drinks break when he drilled a low shot past Martin Dubravka.

But the Magpies did not lie down despite having nothing to play for, with Matt Ritchie equalising with a rasping strike after 58 minutes.

Harry Kane was on hand to restore Spurs' advantage four minutes later with a header from Steven Bergwijn's cross.

It was the England captain's 200th goal for Spurs and he would grab his second of the game right at the death with another header.

The win was also Mourinho's first in eight attempts at St. James' Park as his side remain in the hunt for Europa League qualification.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho said his players were tired even before kick-off.

"The team was tired before we even started," he said. "We had resilience and a great desire to win the match and to fight until the last for our objective, which is the Europa League.

"Since I started we are fourth in the table. If we cannot get the Champions League then the Europa League is important.

"No doubt the subs were important. I knew they would give us the freshness that we needed."
