Mourinho credits Tottenham heart for terrific win as Arsenal record continues

Tottenham produced a vital 2-1 victory over Arsenal in a tight North London derby on Sunday.

Jose Mourinho's side started spritely as Lucas Moura and Harry Kane both tested Emiliano Martinez in the Arsenal goal.

This made it even more shocking when Alexandre Lacazette scored an absolutely stunner from out of nowhere. With the Spurs defence backing off, the Frenchman took his chance from 25 yards out and unleashed a rasping strike into the top corner past Hugo Lloris.

But it was the same old story for Arsenal as Sead Kolasinac gifted an equaliser to Spurs with an errand back-pass to David Luiz.

There was still work to do for Heung-min Son, but a player of the South Korean's quality was never going to let the opportunity pass as he lifted the ball comfortably over Martinez to square things up.

From then on it was a classic back and forth between the fierce rivals, with Ben Davies and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both hitting the woodwork.

The clash was finally settled when Toby Aldeweireld connected on Son's corner with a glancing header into the top corner that left the excellent Martinez without a chance.

The win continues Mourinho's incredible home record managing against Arsenal. It was the 10th time the Portuguese had hosted the Gunners, and he now has six wins and four draws.

Besides personal records, it was also an important result for Spurs' morale after poor results against Bournemouth and Sheffield United. They are now within three points of sixth-placed Wolves.

It was more of the same for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal as missed chances and defensive mistakes once again cost them valuable points, leaving them in ninth and five points off Nuno Espirito Santo's side.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho said the victory was down to the 'heart' shown by his players.

He told Sky Sports: "I think the game was more tactical than anything.

"To be honest I think Mikel [Arteta] found a way for them to play, to be stable and to improve - they are improving and we felt that we should adapt slightly to them and I think we did it very well.

"Because how many times [Kieran] Tierney and [Hector] Bellerin normally reach the last third and how well they were controlled today. I think they were very controlled at that level.

"Even in the first period of the second half when they had more of the ball and they were more in our half, we were quite comfortable in that situation.

"I think also the two midfielders, they did a great job and then we found our chances and great spirit, [that] really helped.

"I think during the game nobody thought about it, even myself I didn't, but Arsenal had 48 hours more than us to rest, so it was hard but come from their hearts this effort, this battle.

"Even in the last minutes of the game after 2-1, zero problems, everything under control so we are happy."
