Mourinho adamant he laid foundations for Real Madrid Euro success

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is adamant he had a say in Real Madrid's European domination in recent seasons.

Mourinho, 56, landed one La Liga gong with Los Blancos but failed to win the Champions League, suffering heartbreak along the way after being knocked out in the semi-finals in three consecutive years.

Since 2014 they have won three European titles in four years – and Mourinho believes the foundations were laid down under his tenure.

He said: “We didn't win the Champions League in my period. We lost in the semi-finals, which probably we shouldn't as we were so close.

“It was really, really hard but probably we started the foundations of a certain mentality, of a certain organisation, and then the club after that made it absolutely unbelievable by winning the number of titles they did."
