Montreal Impact putting together competitive MLS squad - De Santis

Montreal Impact sporting director Nick De Sanctis says the incoming franchise have some big names in place to build a very competitive MLS roster.

The Canadian club have already signed the likes of former Inter Milan defender Nelson Rivas, Frenchman Hassoun Camara, former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Donovan Ricketts and Gambian winger Sanna Nyassi among others and De Santis says there will be further quality signings to come. He has made it clear though that the Impact plan to do things the 'right way'.

"Right now, we're just making sure we build this right," De Santis told the Montreal Gazette. "But trust me, we've got names, big names we've been talking to, but it's got to be right.

"We need to be consistent with what our vision and philosophy is. For fans, sometimes it's hard, because right now everyone is waiting for that big name, but they have to understand at this time, the way we're building, the important pieces we're putting in very key positions is exciting. The fans need to feel that, too."

He added: "It's no secret we want to be competitive from Day One and, if that big name is right, we're open to it and we're going to be excited about it if it happens. But if it has to happen later because we need to take our time and it might be more right only after seeing how the team is doing after a few months and after seeing what the team needs, then so be it."
