Montreal Impact acquire rights to sign Chelsea legend Drogba

Didier Drogba is set to join MLS club Montreal Impact after they acquired his rights.

According to ESPN, the Canadian outfit are set to complete the signing of the 37-year-old Ivory Coast striker after landing his MLS rights from Chicago Fire.

It is understood that Drogba will sign an 18-month deal with the Impact which will net the Chelsea legend more than £1.9million ($USD3m) a year.

The Fire initially obtained Drogba's rights via the discovery player rule but were unsuccessful in their pursuit and have opted to trade to Montreal in exchange for what one source describes as 'substantial amount of targeted and regular allocation money' believed to be well in excess of $100,000.

Four-time Premier League and one-time European champion Drogba will join fellow English top flight greats Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the USA and Canada's top flight following their recent moves to LA Galaxy and New York City FC respectively.
