AS Monaco are making a late move to beat Manchester United to the signing of Swansea City midfielder Daniel James.
The London Evening Standard says United were hoping to land the 21-year-old – who is entering the final year of his contract – for a bargain price of around £10million.
Swansea's valuation is closer to £20m and the two clubs have been locked in negotiations in a bid to reach compromise.
It is now understood that an agreement is close to being reached, with United's hand forced by Monaco's emergence as rival suitors.
James' heart is believed to be set on a move to Old Trafford, which is why potential moves to Leeds and Brighton came to nothing.
But Monaco, who have a stellar record of developing young talent, could provide a tempting alternative to United.
