Three Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion clubs have had their introduction to the competition pushed back by a year due to delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.

The new Charlotte franchise had been due to debut in 2021 but will now have to wait until the following season, while teams based in St Louis and Sacramento will now not make their bow until 2023.

Austin FC, who are further along the road in their preparations than their counterparts in Charlotte, remain on course to join MLS next year.

The decision was made by MLS commissioner Don Garber in conjunction with the league's expansion committee.

"It is important for each club to take the necessary time to launch their inaugural MLS seasons the way their fans and communities deserve," Garber said in a statement.

"With the extra year to make up for what has been a challenging 2020, these teams will be well-positioned for their debuts and for long-term success."
