Milner, Mane delighted as Liverpool thump West Ham

Liverpool fired home four goals as they thumped West Ham 4-0 for their opening game of the new season.

Mohamed Salah tapped in a 19th-minute opener from Andy Robertson's cross on his return to action for the Reds at Anfield.

The hosts doubled their advantage when Sadio Mane turned in James Milner's cut-back after being left unmarked six yards from goal.

The Senegalese forward added his second and Liverpool's third early in the second period.

Substitute Daniel Sturridge rounded off the scoring in the closing stages to ensure Liverpool recorded their 500th victory in the Premier League era.

Afterwards, Milner stated: "Expectation is always there first game of the season. It's a good victory, a pretty good performance, but we can always improve on that. It was a good start all in all.

"The most important thing was to get off with a good start."

And Mane also remarked: "We played great football, created lots of chances and deserved to win. I'm happy to score goals for the team. I think the team was fantastic today, and we now have important games to come. We take it game-by-game."
