Mikel will leave Chelsea if he is again reduced to bench role

John Obi Mikel has threatened to quit Chelsea if he is not guaranteed a regular starting spot next season.

The Nigerian midfielder has been a constant under Guus Hiddink after spending a lengthy amount of time playing a bit-part role when the likes of Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez and Roberto Di Matteo were at the helm.

With news that Antonio Conte is set to take the reins at Stamford Bridge, Mikel has revealed that he will seek assurances regarding his role as a Blues player going forward before making a decision on his career in West London.

"I have one more season with Chelsea but I know when this season ends, we will definitely sit down and try to sort out whatever needs to be sorted out," the 28-year-old Nigeria captain said.

"If it means me leaving, fine. If it means me staying, then I have to play because one thing I don't want to do is to sit on the bench like I did before.

"It's not very nice, especially now when you have kids you just want to do what you can to play," said the midfielder.

"Wherever it is I just want to play. When this season ends we will definitely sort out the contracts.

"Legacy is important and I'm very proud and happy that I've kept this legacy to be able to achieve what I have achieved."
