Missing out on Hull City's Harry Maguire has prompted Middlesbroughto step up their interest in James Chester.

Reports suggest that Boro have failed in their bid to sign Maguire, 23, from the manager-less Tigers and will now turn their attentions to West Bromwich Albion's Chester.

The 27-year-old Wales international has been told he can leave The Hawthorns in the current transfer window and could be on his way to the Riverside Stadium with Aitor Karanka keen.

The Teesside club have increased their chase for Chester as they look to strengthen their defence prior to their Premier League return which kicks off against Stoke City a home this weekend.
