Middlesbrough will compete with Stoke City for Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies.

The Mirror says new Boro boss Gordon Strachan will put Smithies at the top of his hit-list when he moves into the hot seat.

Strachan takes charge at Boro this week and the club's spies have already compiled a dossier on Smithies as they look for a new number one in a hurry.

Smithies, 19, is already a £1.5million target for Stoke City, so Strachan will have to dig deep to land him - although he is being strongly recommended to take a punt on the youngster.

Huddersfield want a fortune for Smithies, but they could be tempted to sell if a serious offer comes in during the next few weeks.
