Middlesbrough chief Lamb: Southgate can take club into top four

Middlesbrough chief Keith Lamb says manager Gareth Southgate can take the club into the top four.

Lamb, speaking on BBC Tees' Boro Fans Forum, said: "We have in Gareth Southgate and his staff fantastic people at this football club who believe in what they are trying to do.

"Gareth has his own ambitions. He is driving the players here to be successful not just for the sake of the club, but for themselves.

"In fact I don't see, if we keep progressing, why we can't eventually compete for a top four spot.

"Wouldn't it be nice to do it on a relative shoestring?

"Football is a very expensive business these days but money doesn't always buy success."

Lamb's comments were echoed by Southgate, who said: "We have to build a stable football club. The club ought to be able to finance itself.

"We can do that and still play exciting football and believe that we can achieve things.

"I believe that it will take time to challenge the top clubs, but there is no reason why we can't do it given time."
