Middlesbrough chairman did all he could to keep Johnson from Man City

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson insists he tried everything to keep hold of new Manchester City hero Adam Johnson.

While Gibson is satisfied with the money received for a player who was out of contract in the summer, he did everything in his power to keep him at the club.

"I'm still grieving the loss of Adam," Gibson told Boro's website. "I didn't want to see Adam playing for Manchester City - I wanted to see him playing for Middlesbrough.

"In fact, I made Adam an unbelievable offer to stay with us the day before he left to join Manchester City. But he wanted the chance to play in the Premier League for such a big club.

"If we hadn't sold Adam in January, we had the risk of a tribunal so I think the deal we did was in the best interests of the football club and in the best interests of Adam.

"Adam is a talented player who did his best for this football club and we wish him all the best at Manchester City."
