Messi wants Champions League to help beat Man Utd's Ronaldo for player gongs

Barcelona star Lionel Messi admits he wants to win the Champions League so to beat great rival Cristiano Ronaldo for the Player of the Year awards this year.

Messi was beaten by Manchester United star Ronaldo for both the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year after the Premiership giants won the Champions League last season.

And he said: "I have unfinished business in the Champions League. I want to win this and the time has now come.

"The individual awards always arrive thanks to collective work. For that reason if the team win the Champions League, the World Player award would be a lot closer for me."
