Former Arsenal star Paul Merson feels Andy Carroll should return to Newcastle United.

Toon boss Alan Pardew admits he's keen on Carroll, who is currently on-loan at West Ham United from Liverpool.

Merson wrote in the Daily Star: "Andy Carroll should go back to Newcastle next summer and prove Brendan Rodgers wrong.

"I very much doubt he'll ever return to Liverpool because the manager doesn't want him - and for me that's a mistake.

"The thing that shocks me is that Rodgers seems to have made his mind up about Carroll before he even got to Liverpool.

"He won't change his mind now. He's too stubborn. I mean they could call him back in January - but they won't, will they? That's their loss in my opinion.

"Liverpool have no Plan B and when Luis Suarez doesn't score, they don't have a lot else."
