Merson supports England axing of Man City fullback Walker

Former England striker Paul Merson supports the axing of Manchester City fullback Kyle Walker.

The 29-year-old has been a key player for Manchester City but was snubbed by England boss Gareth Southgate, even after Aaron Wan-Bissaka withdrew with injury.

Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star: “Kyle Walker has a job on to get back in the England team and he isn't the only one who should be worried.

Gareth Southgate has done the right thing dropping him because it sends a message out that no-one is safe.

“Don't get me wrong. Kyle Walker is one of the best right backs in the world, playing for one of the best teams in the world in Manchester City. He's unlucky he wasn't picked in the squad, but I do like Gareth's thinking. For years it's been too easy to get in the England squad and stay there."
