Melbourne Victory's Thompson to make decision on Australia's France clash

Archie Thompson will again have to choose between club and country in October and it is a decision he is not looking forward to.

The 34-year old striker recently opted to play for Australia at the East Asian Cup instead of staying in Melbourne to take on Liverpool in a packed MCG friendly and is now faced with another choice when the Socceroos tackle France in Paris in October.

That match, which is preparation for the 2014 World Cup, falls on the same weekend as the Victory's 2013/14 A-League opener against arch rivals Melbourne Heart leaving Thompson with one hell of a decision.

"I got put on the spot a couple of weeks ago," Thompson said. "Would you rather be in Korea or would you rather be playing Liverpool?

"I tell you, it wasn't fun over there chasing the Koreans and the Japanese, and it looked fantastic (at the MCG).

"It's a tough one. I'd obviously love to play, I'd love to be selected or be in contention (to play France). We'll see what happens. Obviously I'd (also) love to play against Heart."

To resolve the never-ending issue for Australian players, Thompson feels the A-League should simply be put on hold just like all other competitions around the world.

"It's a tough one. You're dammed if you do and you're dammed if you don't," he added.

"Pretty much all countries' leagues stop I'm pretty sure, so I can't see why ours shouldn't."
