Melbourne coach Merrick happy with current situation

Melbourne Victory coach Ernie Merrick says he is content with how his squad is travelling at the moment. The reigning champions are sitting second on the A-League table after winning five of their last six matches with the biggest plus being the amount of depth they have throughout their playing list.

Apart from the usual suspects Archie Thompson, Carlos Hernandez, Kevin Muscat and Rodrigo Vargas, the Victory have plenty of players capable of winning a match themselves or playing their role to perfection to help the team gain maximum points in any fixture.

Merrick says the current situation at the club is a very good one and admits it's the deepest squad he has been at the helm of.

''At Melbourne Victory for sure,'' he said.

''The scary thing is we have got really good players to come back as well, which will give me a tremendous headache in selection but that's the type of headache I like. We have got good depth from an age perspective. Gary [football manager Gary Cole] has been signing up-and-coming youngsters.

''Even in season three [when the squad was said to be at its best] we would have said 'Kempy' was struggling and Carlos [Hernandez] was struggling. Now we have proved over a period of time and being persistent that we have got a really good squad. But we can't sit back."

The Victory will be aiming for three wins in a row when they meet Perth Glory away on Sunday.
