McTominay delighted as Man Utd win at Spurs: We owed them one

Scott McTominay admits revenge was a motivating factor as Manchester United won 3-1 at Tottenham on Sunday.

Edinson Cavani thought he had given United a first-half lead with a smooth finish from Paul Pogba's pass but the goal was controversially ruled out by referee Chris Kavanagh following a video assistant referee consultation after McTominay caught Son Heung-min with his trailing arm.

United's sense of injustice was increased when Son put Spurs ahead before the break but the visitors recovered impressively for a win that leaves them 11 points behind leaders Manchester City with a game in hand.

Fred was involved in the build-up and conclusion of the equaliser after 57 minutes, pouncing after Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris had saved well from Cavani.

And Cavani finally got the goal his superb movement and constant menace deserved with 11 minutes left when he launched himself to head beyond Lloris from substitute Mason Greenwood's cross. Greenwood completed the formalities with virtually the last kick of the game as he provided a finish that was too powerful for Lloris at his near post.

Afterwards, McTominay stated: "At half-time the message was clear: just keep calm, no need to panic. We know that we have good character in the team and against a really difficult team, so we're happy.

"Sometimes that's the way football goes. For the first 30 minutes by our standards, we were not good enough but we dominated the whole second half to be fair.

"Personally I'm not a fan of VAR but the referees have to make decisions. It was a case of keeping calm. Everybody makes mistakes and that's part and parcel of it.

"[The disallowed goal] was a total injustice but you just have to get on with the game. Getting three points in a really difficult game was pleasing.

"Fred was terrific today, along with Paul [Pogba] and Mason [Greenwood]. They had real energy and the manager will be pleased with a lot of players today.

"We owed Tottenham a proper game - we had that in our minds - and today was much better than last time."
