McGhee desperate for Hughes to sign Motherwell contract

Motherwell boss Mark McGhee is urging Stephen Hughes to sign his new contract. The 26-year-old is considering the Steelmen's offer of a new deal but it is ambition more than money that will determine where he plays his football.

McGhee said: "I can definitely improve him. Stephen is such a good player but he is not in the Scotland squad.

"He is a good enough player that he should be getting recognition at that level but he isn't for a reason.

"There are aspects of his game I feel I can help him with to achieve an international call-up. I don't think he is far away from it.

"One issue with him is consistency. He has to be doing it every week for 10 weeks and 10 games.

"He's played a huge part for us over the last nine games, played well at Tynecastle recently and scored a great goal so he is getting close to it."
