Steve McClaren is looking to partner Dutch duo Georginio Wijnaldum and Siem De Jong in the Newcastle United midfield for the upcoming season.

The Magpies have struggled for quite a while in the midfield area but with the arrival of Wijnaldum and De Jong from a long term injury, the North East side suddenly look formidable in the middle of the park once again.

Manager McClaren is aware that he has two quality midfielders at his disposal and is now looking to partner the Dutch pair to form a strong combination.

McClaren told the Chronicle: "They (Wijnaldum and De Jong) are two quality players. People are probably are wondering, 'Can they play in the same team?' I think you saw in the last 20 minutes against Gladbach that yes they can.

"Gini can play in any position around the midfield area. Sometimes we say our system does not really matter. We are going to look at other systems too. It is our style of play to bed in, introduce and really become good at."
