Hamilton boss Billy Reid admits it is unlikely James McCarthy would return on loan from Wigan. Teenager McCarthy left Hamilton for Wigan in the summer but has struggled to make an impact at Roberto Martinez's Latics due to form and fitness and rumours have suggested he could return to New Douglas Park in a loan capacity.
"I have heard the rumours but don't really think there is much mileage in it at the moment," Reid told the Daily Record.
"We'd love James back, that's obvious, but I don't think it's really viable. He is down there, he's paid handsomely and Accies have been paid by Wigan.
"I've not spoken to them about it and while I'd love it to happen, financially I don't think it could.
"If Martinez thought it would work for him to let James go out on loan then he has to decide that but we know it would certainly work for us. Whether Wigan would see that as the right move for James, only they can answer. I'm not in the position to do that for them.
"James has had a difficult time since he left. He was injured in pre-season and has been playing catch-up. But I'm sure he'll take his chance when he gets it because he's a real talent."
