Maya Yoshida ready to fight for his place at Southampton

Maya Yoshida is ready to fight for his place at Southampton.

The defender was back on the teamsheet for the first time in five weeks as Saints were held to a 1-1 draw by Watford at St Mary's.

“We had a couple of changes, and I was waiting for a chance for myself – Gabbi also," he said.

“We spoke yesterday, and he showed a great performance today, so I'm really happy for him.

“I'm really happy to be back in the starting XI and I'll keep fighting, as well as the rest of the players.

“I understand what I need to do and I understand when the chance is coming. I always prepare well, but we couldn't win and we couldn't keep a clean sheet, so it's not enough.

“Overall, we only have eight points today. That's not enough – we need three points as soon as possible.

“The next game against Fulham away is really important. It's really difficult to play there, but we need to get three points, one hundred per cent.

“I feel like it's one step we've moved forward, but we have to keep going."
