German legend Lothar Matthaus says Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho consciously invites the media to attack him.

Writing for The Sun, he explained: "Manchester United's boss likes to make himself the focus, not the players, as a defence mechanism.

"We also saw at Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid that he picks fights to deflect attention.

"In Germany, we laugh at it. Mourinho just selects a topic to moan about — transfers, team preparation, a rival coach.

"But Pep Guardiola wants it all to be about the performance of his team.

"He's obsessed by possession, like at Bayern Munich, and will not compromise on that at Manchester City.

"Jose wants discipline, especially in defence. Pep trusts in attacking play. That is why I prefer to watch his teams.

"United are STILL the bigger club as they have a greater history and won far more titles."
