Estudiantes defender Javier Mascherano has likened former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi to basketball great Michael Jordan.

Mascherano was asked if any footballer today could be likened to Jordan.

He told Fox Sports: "The one who plays in Barcelona is the closest thing. At least, in the way of competing. It's another sport. The relationships are different. From what little I saw of the series (Jordan's documentary), which does not reveal the inside Jordan, Leo is more grounded and natural. But they are competitive animals, that's why they have been at the top for so many years."

He added: "Leo is perhaps more human. But hey, obviously, in extreme situations there is a look, a cry or something. They are team sports. As much as you are the best, you need those around you, nothing can be done alone. To maintain the place it is important to have a number one, but his teammates must play their role."
