Martinez eyeing solid start for Wigan

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has urged his side to begin quickly in the next Premier League season.

The Latics lost their first two matches by a total of 10 goals, putting them way behind the eight ball, and their Spanish boss wants a much better beginning next term.

"Last season, we made a bad start and effectively started the season with a minus 10 goal difference," Martinez told the club's official website.

"The aim we have is to start the season with the same level of performance that we finished [last] season, especially at the DW."

Wigan finished last season in good form, with just one loss in their last six to stay above the drop zone, and Martinez wants those sorts of performances to follow into the 2011/12 campaign, especially at the DW Stadium.

"We have an opportunity to take our momentum from last season into the new campaign," he added.

"Home form is very important, and there was a real difference as we progressed through last season.

"It doesn't matter who you are facing, every home game is an opportunity and we will be looking to get that first home win as quickly as we can to really fill us with confidence."
