Martinelli and Smith Rowe fire Arsenal into top-four with victory over West Ham

Arsenal have leapfrogged West Ham United into fourth-spot with a massive 2-0 win at the Emirates on Wednesday.

After a week mired in controversy after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the captaincy, Mikel Arteta will be delighted with how his team performed against the Hammers.

Alexandre Lacazette, wearing the armband, set-up the opening goal for Gabriel Martinelli shortly after half-time.

The Frenchman put the ball in behind the West Ham defenders for Martinelli, who finished smartly past Lukasz Fabianski.

The next moment in the game came shortly after when Arsenal were awarded a penalty for Vladimir Coufal's tackle on Lacazette.

Coufal was harshly shown a second yellow card and was sent off, but Lacazette saw his penalty saved by Fabianski.

It didn't matter however as Smith Rowe put the game to bed with three minutes remaining.

The young Englishman maintained his fine form for the season with an excellent goal, cutting inside from the right and rifling the ball into the bottom right-hand corner through the legs of Issa Diop.

Arteta's side are now one point above West Ham in fourth-position on the table.

They next face Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday, while West Ham host Norwich City.
