Manchester United were reportedly prepared to pay a record-breaking transfer fee for Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller.

German publication Kicker.de is reporting the Red Devils were willing to fork out £88million to lure the German international to Old Trafford.

United manager Louis van Gaal made no secret of his admiration for Muller during the transfer window, but the Bundesliga Champions never seriously considered selling their prized asset.

It is understood if Muller did make the switch to United, he would have ben offered a five-year-deal worth £9.2million a season.
