MAN UTD v CHELSEA RECAP: Keepers at the forefront as Blues hold Red Devils

Manchester United and Chelsea played out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford on Monday.

Louis van Gaal's Red Devils put on a much-improved display but were desperately unlucky not to score in the first half with Juan Mata and Anthony Martial both hitting the woodwork while Thibaut Courtois made some top-quality saves to keep Chelsea in the contest.

But David De Gea also had his work cut out and did well to deny the likes of Pedro, Cesar Azpilicueta and John Terry before forcing Nemanja Matic to fire wide when one-on-one with the Spaniard.

United probably deserved to come away with all three points but in the end the two out-of-form heavyweights were forced to share the spoils.

The draw has United sitting sixth on the table having failed to win in six outings while Guus Hiddink's Chelsea edge up to 14th thanks to a third game unbeaten.

- That is more like it from Man Utd. This is the way LVG should have them playing rather than the possession-hungry game that produces very few chances. Will this be the catalyst for a 2016 turnaround?

- Chelsea also improved under Hiddink but still lacking something. The absence of key strikers was evident so is January the time to buy some quality?

United host Swansea City on Saturday as Chelsea take the short trip to South London to take on Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Van Gaal on his future at Man Utd:

"I cannot have any influence on that," he said.

"I can only work with my players and you have seen that the players are fighting for me; they have given a good performance.

"I am under contract so it's not a question of staying, it is a question of fulfilling my contract."

Chelsea's Hiddink on the result without their three main strikers;

"Everyone knows we have some problems in our striker's position due to suspension and injuries.

"We have not won, but now we are three games (unbeaten) and that is important."
