Man Utd tried for Bonucci before Juventus return

Manchester United made an attempt for Leonardo Bonucci before he returned to Juventus last month.

The Sun says United boss Jose Mourinho put the Italian on his wishlist of centre-backs to bolster his defence.

But the 31-year-old was among the players United felt failed to offer value for money - and he ended up rejoining Juventus in a swap deal worth £31million.

Bonucci's wealth of experience was seen as an ideal fit for United's backline, with the defender willing to move again after a year at AC Milan.

He was made available by AC Milan after one season at the San Siro, with Juventus bringing him back to the club with Mattia Caldara moving the other way.
