Man Utd trials for ex-Newcastle keeper Paul Woolston

Manchester United have handed trials to former Newcastle United goalkeeper Paul Woolston.

The Manchester Evening News says United named Woolston, 20, on the bench for the Under-23s' 2-0 win at Middlesbrough on Sunday as new number one Matej Kovar continued in goal.

United are attempting to sign a new goalie to provide competition for Kovar and fellow 18-year-old custodian Alex Fojticek. United are keen to conclude a deal for Woolston but he is understood to be open to heading abroad to revive his career. United signed former Leeds goalkeeper Theo Richardson on an 18-month deal in January 2017 to provide back-up in the U23s.

Woolston's distribution and ability have impressed United coaches but he stands at around six feet tall, which is partly why Newcastle released him. South Shields-born Woolston also spent time with Darlington and Sunderland's academies.
