Manchester United Treble winner David May has declared Bruno Fernandes "priceless".

May believes United have finally found someone to fill the boots of Paul Scholes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his stars close in on a spectacular season finale.

“You couldn't put a price tag on Fernandes now – he's become that vital to United in the space of a few months," said May. “There was talk United overpaid for Bruno – you must be joking! If we'd known what he was going to be like then he's a cut-price bargain, an absolute snip."

And he sees clear ­comparisons in the way Eric Cantona and Fernandes transformed their respective teams.

“Eric was the catalyst for much of what United achieved in the years after he helped them win that first title in 1993," said May.

“His whole mentality changed United's dressing room at that time and he drove them on. Fernandes is doing the same now. He's only been there a few months but already he's the boss – the players follow his lead.

“It takes special qualities for a player to come into a big club like United and have an instant impact on everyone.

“Look at the way Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are performing. He's got them flying, which is huge – and that's directly down to Bruno.

“They know they have someone in midfield who can pick a pass. He is on their wavelength.

“The same with Pogba. If Pogba is talking about ­signing a new deal you ­assume it's because he can see the effect Fernandes is having.

“It's phenomenal how one player can do all that and turn a team around.

“Like Cantona, Fernandes is the missing part of the puzzle and he's made everyone better. And the fans love him because he's a grafter, not a prima ­donna. He plays for the badge, not himself."
