Man Utd's Ferguson plays down Scholes, Giggs retirement rumours

Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United veterans Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are not planning to retire at the end of the season.

Recent reports have suggested that 38-year old midfielder Scholes is set to draw the curtain on his playing career for the second time but Ferguson insists that talk is all premature.

"I would be surprised if Paul had spoken to someone without speaking to me - and he hasn't - so we can dismiss that."

And the Scotsman added that speculation regarding other experienced players such as 39-year old Welshman Giggs and central defender Rio Ferdinand only comes about due to the clubs one-year policy to ageing players.

"Ryan could play for another year or two. Rio has been terrific," he added.

"The speculation comes from our policy of only giving older players one-year contracts."
