Manchester United are pulling back from talks for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.
The People says Louis van Gaal is facing disappointment in his battle to land Hummels with Borussia Dortmund refusing to do business.
Hummels has always been the Manchester United manager's top defensive target.
A source close to Dortmund said: "We've spoken with the player and it is true that some clubs are interested, but we have rejected the chance to negotiate.
"Mats is happy in Dortmund and will be with us next term."
United rate Hummels at around £16million - £7m shy of the release clause in his deal.
