Manchester United are pulling back from plans to deal in David de Gea.
Sky Deutschland says United manager Erik ten Hag would be open to finding a new No 1 at the end of the current campaign.
De Gea's current contract runs until June and it includes an option to extend for another year. The player himself would like to stay with the Premier League giants but adding on another 12 months isn't currently on United's radar, suggesting that a free exit could be on the cards.
Losing De Gea for free would be a blow for the Red Devils, who shelled out £19million to sign him in 2011, but it would also get rid of a huge chunk off their wage bill. Pocketing more than £300,000 a week, he is one of the best-paid players in the Premier League and cheaper options are available in the transfer market.
De Gea wasn't selected to represent Spain at the 2022 World Cup despite Brighton's Robert Sanchez and Brentford's David Raya making the cut. Athletic Bilbao star Unai Simon, who started all four games in Qatar, has been linked with Old Trafford in the past.
