Reports linking Manchester United with a move for Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi are off the mark, according to sources close to the matter.

ESPN FC have poured cold water on the proposed transfer, with sources telling the website there is 'no truth' behind the rumours linking 27-year-old Otamendi with a move to Old Trafford.

It is understood United boss Louis van Gaal sees Michael Carrick as a potential solution to the Red Devils' player shortage in the centre of defence, however United's preference is to recruit a natural defender from elsewhere.

United may still make a move for Otamendi if no other realistic propositions materialise during the transfer window, however the Argentine is not currently on their radar.
