Man Utd ruined chances of signing Upamecano six years ago over living disagreement

Manchester United attempted to sign Dayot Upamecano in 2015.

The centre-back was 16 at the time and playing for French outfit Valenciennes.

And his advisor, Thierry Martinez, revealed United had changed their living arrangements for Upamecano, which ultimately scuppered the move.

"An intermediary met with us, but there was a difference between the project she presented us and what was actually going to happen," Martinez told So Foot, as reported by The Mirror.

"A flat was promised, but that changed to a host family with only six return trips for his parents.

"When you uproot a player at such a young age, that isn't enough. I wanted Dayot to have a stable emotional balance off the pitch."

Upamecano eventually moved to RB Salzburg and then RB Leipzig, where has emerged as one of Europe's top young defenders.

The 22-year-old this week agreed to join Bayern Munich at the end of this season.

United were linked with his signature, as were Chelsea and Liverpool.
