Manchester United have gone cold on the prospect of bringing back Paul Pogba from Juventus.
Pogba has been linked with a return to Old Trafford, but United do not want to enter the auction.
The Manchester Evening News says Kevin Strootman remains United boss Louis van Gaal's top target - but the Dutchman will monitor the Roma enforcer's recovery from his latest knee injury before committing to a deal that would cost in excess of £40m.
Pogba could cost more than double that amount, with the Frenchman's agent recently claiming it would take a world record fee to prise him away from Turin.
United are reluctant to enter what will be a bidding war for a player expected to establish himself as the best midfielder in the world.
