Van de Beek has found himself frozen out by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.
Shaw spoke to Holland's RTL7 last night, stating: "It doesn't just apply to Donny. There are many players who play less often than they would like.
"We understand Donny's feelings. He is a fantastic boy, a very nice boy. We all love him. He is a very good professional. He has not given up and keeps his head up.
"Sometimes he might come into the club a little disappointed or sad because he doesn't play and can't smell it. But he always works hard and trains well."
"His attitude and the way he handles the situation is commendable," Shaw continued. "It's not an easy situation. I've been through it myself. I know how he feels. He must continue as he is doing, because I am sure that he will then have opportunities."
