Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot is delighted to be part of Portugal's Euros squad.

Dalot has joined up with the squad in Budapest, after replacing Manchester City defender João Cancelo. Cancelo was forced to step aside after failing a covid test.

When it became apparent that Cancelo would be denied his place, Portugal chiefs scrambled for a replacement and put in a call to Dalot, who was holidaying in Dubai. The fullback had just completed his U21 Euros campaign and had just begun his summer break when the call was made.

Quoted by O Jogo, Dalot, who spent last season on-loan with AC Milan, said: "It was without a doubt a crazy episode, I was on vacation and was getting ready to go into a restaurant when I received a call from Portugal.

"It was a special moment, I had longed to be in the A team for a long time and it was a huge source of pride, I'm very happy."

Dalot admits he had spoken with Cancelo ahead of joining up with the rest of the Portugal squad in Budapest.

He continued: "The circumstances are not the best for João Cancelo. I had the opportunity to talk to him, having his support at a time like this is fantastic, he is a great example for me, also for everything he has done in the national team and I wish him the best improvement.

"We'll all be playing for him too. As far as I know and I've heard, this is a very united group and I hope to integrate very quickly and to be able to help in the best possible way. I've had a little less than a week to rest from a season that's already gone by. And it's not over yet. I'm here body and soul and physically ready to help the national team."

Dalot isn't expected to see action tonight against Hungary, with Wolves fullback Nelson Semedo set to step up to fill the void left by Cancelo.
