Man Utd defender Ferdinand to wind back off-field commitments for England

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is ready to ditch several of his off-field activities to smooth taking on the England captaincy.

The People says Ferdinand wants to make sure his reign as England skipper remains trouble free after John Terry's sacking. Ferdinand's decision to carefully vet his portfolio of extra commitments was not ordered by the FA - but he is keen to make sure no more shame is heaped on the England captaincy.

Ferdinand is now ready to downsize his hectic off-field schedule for the sake of his country.

His charity work has earned him a fresh respect inside and outside football and repaired a reputation that was tarnished by his missed drugs test in 2003.
