Manchester United considered a move for Brighton veteran striker Glenn Murray last week.
The Daily Mail says United were desperate to get a striker in before the window slammed shut as they sought cover for the injured Marcus Rashford.
But their biggest issue was identifying players who were freely available midway through the season.
Murray, 37, however fits that profile and was considered by United before they opted for Idion Ighalo.
The Shanghai Shenhua striker has joined United on-loan to June.
