Man Utd coach Meulensteen: Rooney will soon catch fire

Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen is backing Wayne Rooney to win the Golden Boot this season.

Meulensteen insists Rooney isn't suffering from a South African hangover.

"It is not in his head. It is not a mental thing. There is no problem about that," Meulensteen told the Manchester Evening News.

"He is a fighter and a strong person and he will get back on top. He set a benchmark last season with 34 goals so he is capable of doing it and if we provide the right ammunition, he will score. He will go on a roll again.

"I don't think it is a hangover for Wayne. It may be for other people but not for Wayne. As a player you have to move on.

"There is nothing you can do about it, it has gone. Sometimes in life and football you hit disappointing experiences and you have to get up and move forward. He is doing that.

"But the media won't give it a rest. Against Newcastle he did some fantastic things, but just because he didn't hit the net they are on his back. But it will come.

"At the end of the day what it has all come from is a massive disappointment for England. They didn't live up to the expectations, including Wayne.

"We know what Wayne can do and the task is to get him up to speed. And we will. I can't look into what Wayne thinks but for him it was a massive disappointment in South Africa.

"He had a fantastic season and then the World Cup comes and he has a bad time. Just because you have a bad World Cup, you don't turn into a bad player. He will get back on song without a shadow of a doubt."
