Man Utd closer to contract agreement with Mata

Manchester United are close to agreeing a new deal with Juan Mata.

The Mirror says the midfielder, who joined United from Chelsea for £37.5million in 2014, is out of contract in two weeks' time and has yet to agree a new deal.

But talks are ongoing between Mata's representatives and United, with those close to the discussions claiming it is “90 per cent" certain an agreement will be reached.

Both parties have been talking for months about an extension, but have so far been unable to agree fresh terms for Mata, who currently earns £140,000-a-week with the Old Trafford giants.

It is understood Mata, who made 22 Premier League appearances last season, wanted a significant hike on his salary to stay, with United unwilling to meet the original demands set out by the player's representatives, given his status as a squad player.

But with both parties locked in talks this week, a compromise could be reached in coming days, with Mata likely to pen a one-year extension to prolong his spell at United.
